State-of-the-Art Facility Houses Full Breadth of Breast Cancer Treatment, Prevention
University Cancer & Blood Center (UCBC), a leading oncology and hematology practice for Northeast Georgia, is now welcoming patients to its Comprehensive Breast Health Center. The state-of-the art facility is adjacent to UCBC’s Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Center, solidifying UCBC’s main campus as the area’s destination site for all cancer care
UCBC’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center is the homebase of its Comprehensive Breast Health Program, a customized, personal approach to breast cancer treatment and prevention. It features a complete staff of highly qualified and dedicated specialists providing the latest in individualized care. This complete and multidisciplinary approach includes surgical care, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and imaging with screening and diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound.
Services include a high-risk screening program that combines advanced technology with expert clinical assessment to determine a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer. Features include risk assessment using multiple computerized models to achieve the most accurate results. Women with an elevated lifetime risk of breast cancer may qualify for more intense screening with 3D mammogram and breast MRI as desired. Additional care includes physical examinations, genetic counseling and testing as indicated, and risk-reducing strategies.
The full breadth of offerings are housed in a 8,100 square-foot facility featuring six exam rooms, two mammography machines, and two ultrasound machines.
“My dream for 30 years has been to take care of my patients with a truly comprehensive approach to breast cancer care,” says expert breast cancer surgeon, Dr. Cody Gunn. “To be able to work alongside UCBC’s medical and radiation oncologists as a part of one team is great for patient care. I believe our comprehensive, personalized care will have a significant positive impact on patient outcomes as well.“
The UCBC Comprehensive Breast Health Program is led by Dr. Gunn and Dr. Ashley Ray, the first fellowship-trained breast surgeon to practice in Athens. Their unique perspectives and backgrounds complement each other in their unified mission to help women prevent, treat, and return to full health after breast cancer treatment. Additionally, the staff specializes in the treatment of benign breast diseases.
The team includes Heather Wheatley, NP, who has long championed the High Risk Breast Clinic, and Casey Freeman, a certified nurse navigator who helps guide every woman through all aspects of her breast care.
A special ribbon cutting ceremony takes place at 4:30 p.m. January 12. Media can RSVP by emailing: [email protected].
