Dr. Pramod Gaudel of University Cancer & Blood Center appeared on the April 21 episode of “The Weekly Check-Up” on WSB Radio in Atlanta to talk about all things oncology. Originally from Nepal, Dr. Gaudel joined University Cancer & Blood Center in 2023 as a board-certified oncologist and hematologist. He practices at the Snellville office. Throughout the episode, he explored the progress and developments in the field of oncology.

Dr. Gaudel emphasized that cancer is not as morbid a subject as commonly believed. He talked about the increasing number of individuals cured of cancer compared to those dying from the disease. He shared that throughout the past 30 years, the rate of cancer mortality has declined because of new developments in cancer treatment modalities.

Dr. Gaudel noted the transformation in oncology over the years, particularly in the therapeutic approach. Many therapies now do not require chemotherapy. Hair loss and alopecia, once commonly associated with cancer treatment, are no longer common concerns. Dr. Gaudel explained how immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, prolonging survival rates without the need for chemotherapy.

Specializing in thoracic oncology, Dr. Gaudel shared the impact of clinical trials and their role in offering patients access to cutting-edge treatments. He discussed cancer prevention through lifestyle modifications and screenings, shedding light on the importance of early detection.

Dr. Gaudel spoke on the crucial role of social workers in supporting family throughout the patient’s cancer journey. As survivorship rates continue to rise, he emphasized the significance of addressing survivors’ unique needs, including mental health support and managing lingering side effects.
