Breast Surgeon
Dr. Gunn is a board-certified general surgeon who has been practicing in Athens, Georgia for more than 30 years. His practice is focused on breast surgery concerning breast cancer and diseases of the breast. He joined UCBC in 2022 and sees patients at the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center. Dr. Gunn performs surgery at Piedmont Athens Regional and St. Mary’s Healthcare System hospitals.
In 2015, Dr. Gunn formed the High Risk Breast Cancer Program, which was the first program of its kind in Northeast Georgia. The program combines advanced technology with expert clinical assessment and more intensive screening for earlier detection of breast cancer in high risk women.
Dr. Gunn’s passion for helping people combined with his interest in medicine influenced his career path. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. He earned his medical doctorate from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, where he served as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Gunn completed his surgical residency at the Medical College of Georgia.
In addition to serving on numerous committees and boards throughout his career, he has been the chairman of the Breast Center Physicians Advisory Board, Breast Center Committee, Surgical Case Review Committee, and Medical Staff Quality Committee.
Dr. Gunn is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, Crawford Long Medical Society, Georgia Surgical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, Moretz Surgical Society, Southern Society of Clinical Surgeons Inc., the American Society of Breast Surgeons, American Society of Breast Diseases, HER2 Breast Cancer Advisory Board, and International Society for Cancer Risk Assessment and Management.
Inspired by his mother’s cancer experience, Dr. Gunn treats breast cancer with a personal, compassionate touch. Each patient is unique, and Dr. Gunn has an individualized approach, guiding and educating them, while offering empathy and hope throughout their entire cancer journey.
Dr. Gunn and his wife Janie have three children. He is a native of Atlanta, Georgia.
