Dr. Griffin is a double board-certified surgical oncologist and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgeon specializing in cancers of the pancreas, liver, biliary tree/gallbladder, stomach, small intestine, and skin. He joined UCBC in May 2023 as the Director of Surgical Oncology and HPB Surgery and has been in practice locally since 2020 at Piedmont Athens Regional Specialty Services. He established the first comprehensive surgical oncology program in Northeast Georgia and aims to provide Athens and the surrounding communities with the same level of advanced surgical oncology care previously only available at major academic centers.
Originally from Waynesboro, GA, Dr. Griffin graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. He was a First Honor Graduate and member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he was awarded the prestigious William Stewart Halsted Award in Surgery. After medical school, he completed general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During residency, he also completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center investigating the genetic basis of pancreatic cancer and pancreatic cysts. After residency, he completed a surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Griffin is an Assistant Professor of Surgery with the AU/UGA Medical Partnership and preceptor for the AU/UGA surgery clerkship. He serves on the system-wide Piedmont Healthcare Oncology Clinical Governance Council and locally on the Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center Oncology Committee. He is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, Americas Hepatopancreatobiliary Association, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the American College of Surgeons.
